Her latest books include the middle grade novel HOPE’S PATH TO GLORY, and a picture book illustrated by James E. I’m still dreaming and Jerdine is still writing. Her body of work had all the depth and breadth I dreamed of someday having. Two of her books were in our family’s regular reading rotation ( In My Momma’s Kitchen and Raising Dragons), and we had checked out several others from the library (shout outs to Harvey Potter’s Balloon Farm and Hewitt Anderson’s Great Big Life). When I interviewed author Jerdine Nolen in 2010, during my first year with The Brown Bookshelf, I was a bit star struck. ![]()

You don't really love - oh, what is here is higher than love! What's most frightening is that it's so terribly clear, and there's such joy. It’s no wonder that Cornwall keeps cropping up in my books. As a family, we have been going back there ever since and it’s our favourite place in the world. I have holidayed in Cornwall since the age of three, when my parents first took me to the coastal village of Trevone, near Padstow. It can be hard to think of the right name for a character – sometimes one will just hit me and I’ll know it’s suitable right away, but if I’m not sure I just look at my list of ancestors and pick one. ![]() I have done a lot of research into my family history and often use the surnames of my ancestors for characters in my novels. I use my ancestors’ names for my characters I thought I was a Londoner, through and through… I’ve never had an impulse to learn to play the bagpipes, but maybe I should give it a go – the skill might be in my genes. Undoubtedly, such treatment can create resentment in kids - especially when parents actually confiscate their beloved comic books. How could this movie not do so?Īlso, many kids had similar experiences facing off against boring, normal adults who just couldn’t understand such material. For one thing, many of the old horror comics ( Tales From The Crypt, The Vault of Horror, etc.) featured gruesome acts of revenge. Billy’s crime? Reading trashy comic books, of course! ( A Reader of Fictions) It's a great choice for those who enjoyed Trenton Lee Stewart's The Mysterious Benedict Society, as well as Harry Potter. ![]() The Ability is a great read for more mature middle graders. Reminiscent of early Harry Potter novels with its neglected hero, oddball teachers, eccentric assortment of classmates, and secret school where students learn to harness their powers, the novel still manages ultimately to feel fresh and original, and the narrative strikes a delicate balance between light-hearted wish-fulfillment, fun, dark moments of heartbreak, and genuine suspense…Those looking for a read-alike to Stewart’s The Mysterious Benedict Society will be delighted with Christopher’s adventure. This book is great for anyone, young or old. It is like Harry Potter for the next generation. There is not a dry spot in this book, no page that I had read twice to understand it. I knew there would be one because there was a cliff hanger ending. ![]() Luckily, there is a sequel coming soon, Mindscape. It has lots of action, suspense, mystery, and some comedy, as well. “A brilliantly crafted tale, from the quality of the writing to the twistiness of the plot and the complexity of the real-life issues the characters are dealing with… A thrilling, touching, thought-provoking read.” (Common Sense Media) ![]() ![]() ![]() A clever debut from an author worth watching.
